Here are some trees at the South Davis Chevron, 1601 Research Park Drive, Davis, in front of Hometown Chinese Restaurant. Someone has been crudely and aimlessly hacking at them for over a month, doing sore real, permanent damage. One word: morons.

This isn't a tree, is it? What example of tree abuse can this possibly represent?

Well, this is what happens to oak seedlings along the sides of Highway 113 between Woodland and Davis (in this case on the southbound side, between Willow Slough and County Road 29) when the Caltrans mowers come along.

That's the remains of the flagged stake they mowed down. Thanks for your diligence and care, Caltrans!

This tree in West Davis has been nipped and snipped and pretty much ruined, for no good reason--unless the homeowner was worried about shading that array of solar panels . . . .

This row of oddly hacked trees is on the east side of a house on Cowell Boulevard in Davis.

My best guess is that there's a chainsaw in the garage and a man that doesn't know how to use a chainsaw in the house.

File this one under either hideous or disfigured.

Here's another 52nd Street tree. After the failure of a single branch, the owner called in someone recommended by a neighbor. The tree was topped by the boob with the chainsaw and now the leaders terminate in hideous tangles of witch's brooms. It's an ugly sight in the summer, but positively grotesque after leaf fall.

Here's a textbook example of unnecessary tree-topping from 52nd Street in Sacramento. Prior to this pointless exercise in maiming, the tree was an attractive specimen--one of the best on a block not well treed.

These two zelkovas at the southeast corner of the AM/PM were also ruined in an effort to discourage the birds from roosting. It's hard to imagine the level of ignorance of a pruner who would do this kind of work.

The City of Davis is currently in the process of levying a fine on the owner for proceeding with the chainsaw mayhem after being instructed not to.

Here is a tree at the south west corner of the AM/PM at 705 Russell Boulevard, Davis. The tree was irreparably damaged in an effort to prevent birds from roosting in it.

How about this row of pears between the USDA building at 430 G Street and Thai Nakorn restaurant at 424 G Street, Davis? What kind of ignorant "landscapers" were let loose with sharp instruments to ruin the trees? For shame!

These people Plant Amnesty in Seattle have a lot to say about tree (and shrub) abuse.

El Macero Shopping Center continued

This as an even less good picture than the last few, but you can probably see the big stub at the right. This sad specimen is located at the northeast corner of the Nugget building.

And why is it that tenants, like the Nugget, don't complain about the mayhem that "landscapers" do to the parking lot trees and the lack of shade? The appearance of the parking lot reflects on the anchor tenants most of all.

El Macero Shopping Center continued

This tree is at the north side of the parking lot. I can only ask, again, "What could possibly have been in the minds of a crew that did this?" It solved no structural problems and destroyed the health and beauty of the tree.

The condition of the trees at the El Macero Shopping Center in South Davis--home of a Nugget Market, among other tenants--is pretty miserable. The choice of trees was poor at the outset, few have thrived, and the care has been atrocious.



The trees to the right have been aimlessly and pointlessly hacked. What the people caring for the trees here had in mind and why the management hasn't stopped them is puzzle.
